Have you seen the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer?
Speculation time: I’m convinced the magical creatures loose in New York are just the setup for the story’s real conflict: what happens when the magical and muggle (or “no-maj”) worlds collide. The story takes place in a muggle city, involves muggle characters in important roles, and pretty obviously involves some breaking of the International Statute of Secrecy. Besides that, we already know magic is much more strictly hidden in America, with prohibitions against marrying or even befriending muggles. Add in the witch-hunting Second Salem group and mentions of Grindewald’s anti-muggle attacks in Europe, and it’s not hard to see where this is going.
Except … where is it going? After all, it’s not as if the International Statute of Secrecy can be overturned in the 1920s, and it’s obvious the Second Salemers won’t succeed in stamping out magic. Even Rappaport’s Law, which divided the magical and “no-maj” worlds completely, was not repealed until the 50s according to Pottermore. The only option would be to maintain the status quo, and I’m not even sure how that could be done, with creatures like the ones in the trailer running around New York and witch-hunters rallying the people against magic. Mass memory wipes? I guess we’ll see.
